In the state of Michigan, there’s a significant effort underway to ensure that all emergency transport agencies and first responders are well-educated about autism. This initiative aims to equip them with the knowledge and tools necessary to provide the best possible care for individuals on the autism spectrum.
American Medical Response (AMR) has taken a notable step forward by becoming the first EMS transport agency in Grand Rapids to complete the Autism Ready Certification Program. This certification not only enhances the skills of first responders but also demonstrates AMR’s commitment to improving service delivery for individuals with autism.
Now, AMR has introduced a new set of tools known as Carter Kits, specifically designed to assist autistic patients during emergencies. The loud sirens and bright lights of an ambulance can be overwhelming and can cause stress and anxiety for some individuals. The Carter Kits are designed to alleviate this distress.
“Inside the kit itself are quite a few sensory items that are known to help calm and soothe individuals who are in crisis or on a spectrum,” said Dr. Samantha Mishra, EMS for Children Program Coordinator at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. This thoughtful approach aims to create a more supportive environment for patients, allowing them to feel more at ease during a stressful experience.
The Carter Kits were named in honor of the son of a police officer from the east side of the state who is on the autism spectrum. This personal connection highlights the importance of understanding the unique needs of individuals with autism and tailoring responses to provide effective care. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services collaborated with a non-profit organization to ensure that every EMS agency is equipped to help individuals on the spectrum.
“Our goal is to take those opportunities to provide education to our first responders, as well as also making sure that our patient care is always, you know, the best that it can be in pediatric calls specifically, are one of those calls that are very difficult,” explained Jeremy Baldrica, Quality Improvement Specialist for Kent County Emergency Medical Services. This proactive approach is vital in fostering a supportive and understanding atmosphere for both patients and responders.
Experts indicate that the tools provided in the Carter Kits can significantly help de-escalate tense situations while improving communication, ultimately ensuring the safety of everyone involved. “We’re also kind of in a way, just finding out what we can do differently to kind of meet them where they are versus forcing what we’re trying to do on somebody where it’s not beneficial for them, I guess, can be pretty distressing for them,” remarked Alex Truman, Operations Manager at AMR. This insight emphasizes the need for adaptability and compassion in emergency responses, particularly when interacting with individuals with autism.
AMR’s entire fleet is now equipped with a Carter Kit, making it the first transport agency in Kent County to complete comprehensive training for all providers. “Having that champion and bringing the training and education to our peers is really what’s making the difference and helping us as first responders be ready to care for all people,” Dr. Mishra noted. This commitment to ongoing education and awareness is essential in ensuring that first responders are prepared to meet the needs of all patients effectively.
Soon, Carter Kits will be available in every ambulance throughout the state, representing a significant milestone in enhancing emergency response for individuals with autism. The ongoing collaboration between various agencies and organizations ensures that the support for individuals on the autism spectrum continues to grow and improve.
