Believing in yourself is often the first step toward achieving any goal. Combine that with the encouragement of loved ones and the support of a close-knit community, and the possibilities become endless. This is a lesson Cooper Koenigsknecht knows all too well.
When we first met Cooper, he was just starting out as the junior manager for the Fowler Varsity football team. Not only was he running onto the field, but he was also showing his passion for sports by hosting his own version of the popular 6 Sports Friday Night 5th Quarter. At that time, Cooper was already demonstrating his love for the game and his determination to be part of the action. Fast forward a few years, and Cooper’s hard work has transformed him from a manager to a star on the field. As a three-year varsity starter for the Eagles, Cooper made a name for himself by playing defense and leaving his mark on every game. Whether it was tackling opponents or sacking quarterbacks, his presence was always felt. His dedication in the weight room also set him apart as he consistently pushed himself to get stronger.
“I lift a lot of weights. And watch a lot of film too and you put that all together and it made me a better football player and a better person as well,” Cooper said.
His hard work and passion for the sport didn’t go unnoticed. This fall, Cooper will be taking his talents to the next level, continuing his athletic career at Madonna University. On a football scholarship, he’ll be playing for their team, marking another incredible chapter in his journey.
“Once I sat in the chair and they said, ‘We want to offer you.’ I was awestruck I accomplished that dream and I can accomplish more,” he said.
Cooper’s determination and positive attitude are qualities that have been with him since childhood. Overcoming challenges has been a consistent theme in his life, and he credits his family for always pushing him to be his best. Born nonverbal, Cooper faced difficulties early on. But with the unwavering support of his parents, Scott and Jenny, and the strength of his community, he was able to overcome those obstacles and achieve what many thought was impossible.
Now, Cooper has made history as the first autistic student in Michigan to play college football. This remarkable accomplishment earned him recognition at the state level, and it’s no surprise that those around him couldn’t be more proud.
“I can’t think of a person more deserving, a person who’s worked harder, embraced by his community, and overcome difficulties and his disability,” said State Rep. Graham Filler.
Cooper’s journey is a powerful reminder that a disability does not define a person. His parents always encouraged him to focus on his abilities and to never let autism hold him back. Now, they hope Cooper’s story can inspire others to believe in what’s possible for themselves and their families.
For Cooper, it’s not just about his own success, but about helping to inspire the next generation of autistic athletes. When asked what advice he would give to young kids with similar dreams, Cooper doesn’t hesitate to share his wisdom.
“I would tell young kids out there that anything is possible. God will chase your dreams with you too,” he said.
As Cooper continues to blaze new trails, he is showing others that with belief in yourself, determination, and support, the sky’s the limit. From being the first autistic student in Michigan to play college football to becoming a role model for young athletes, Cooper’s story is one of perseverance, faith, and the power of community support.
