Being neurodivergent can be a daunting experience when it comes to air travel. From the loud noises of boarding announcements to the confined space of a plane, it can easily overwhelm those with sensory sensitivities. Traveling can be an especially challenging experience for neurodivergent travelers who may struggle with the overwhelming sensory input encountered in busy airports. The bustling crowds, bright lights, and constant noise can lead to heightened anxiety and discomfort, making even the simplest aspects of air travel feel insurmountable.
In response to these challenges, Gerald R. Ford International Airport has unveiled a groundbreaking new sensory room designed to provide a calming, immersive environment. This space offers a much-needed reprieve from the stresses of travel and aims to make flying more accessible and comfortable for all, including neurodivergent travelers.
The sensory room, the first of its kind in Michigan, is located at the beginning of Concourse A. It has been specifically designed to cater to individuals on the autism spectrum and those with sensory processing disorders. This space features multiple zones aimed at easing the anxiety and stress commonly associated with air travel. Whether it’s a quiet area to decompress or a space for practicing the boarding process, the sensory room provides a versatile environment tailored to meet the varied needs of its users.
“This space is designed to be a refuge for those who need a break from the sensory overload of traveling,” says Nicole Chapman, senior designer with HKS, the architecture firm responsible for the room’s design. “We’ve created areas that simulate various sensory experiences, allowing travelers to familiarize themselves with the process of boarding a plane, placing luggage, and even walking through a jet bridge.”
Chapman and her team worked closely with Disability Advocates of Kent County (DAKC) and other community partners to ensure the room addressed the needs of neurodivergent travelers. The space incorporates sensory zones that both stimulate and soothe, offering a balanced approach to sensory experiences.
“Air travel can be overwhelming for anyone, but for individuals with sensory sensitivities, it can be debilitating,” explains Jon Cauchi, an inclusion consultant with DAKC. “This room is a game-changer in terms of inclusion, showing a commitment to welcoming travelers of all abilities.”
The sensory room is divided into four distinct zones:
- Transition Zone: The first zone serves as a buffer between the busy airport terminal and the sensory room. It allows travelers to adjust gradually to the quieter, more controlled environment inside.
- Active Zone: In this area, guests can engage in activities designed to stimulate their senses in a thoughtful and controlled manner. The zone features an activity wall that promotes fine motor skill development and playful graphics, such as a “Cloudscape,” which softens the harsh glare of bright lights.
- Respite Zone: This peaceful space is inspired by nature and provides a tranquil setting for those who need quiet time to recalibrate. The room includes calming elements like a faux fireplace, twinkling lights, and scenic videos showcasing beautiful Michigan landscapes. Travelers can also access a video with breathing exercises to manage anxiety. The soundproof design of this zone ensures a peaceful atmosphere even amidst the hustle and bustle of the airport.
- Airplane Simulation Zone: This interactive area allows travelers to practice the boarding process in a safe, low-pressure environment. This zone is particularly beneficial for parents who are teaching their children how to navigate the flight experience. It provides a hands-on opportunity to simulate the entire journey, from the initial boarding to walking through a jet bridge.
For the Airplane Simulation Zone, Delta Air Lines contributed seating, while Aero Bridge donated a section of a jet bridge to further enhance the realism of the experience.
Lisa Adams, director of Citizen HKS, a division of HKS focused on public interest design, is enthusiastic about the impact of this project.
“This is the first airport sensory room I’ve seen that incorporates multiple modalities of sensory sensitivities. We aimed to offer a balance between refuge and stimulation because many individuals on the spectrum experience extreme sensory sensitivity,” Adams says. “Providing a space for them to recalibrate is critical, but offering the right kind of sensory stimulation in a thoughtful way can also help prevent them from feeling overwhelmed during their travels.”
As part of its broader efforts to improve accessibility and inclusivity, Gerald R. Ford International Airport has also introduced other features to enhance the travel experience for all passengers. These additions include adult care stations and a variety of accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
“We want people to know that this is West Michigan, a place that embraces everyone,” says Tory Richardson, President and CEO of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority. “We’ve been intentional in making sure all travelers, including those with disabilities, feel welcome.”
The sensory room has already garnered positive feedback from travelers, and the airport plans to continue raising awareness of this new resource through social media campaigns and guided tours. The goal is to ensure that all passengers, particularly neurodivergent travelers and their families, are aware of the sensory room and can make use of its facilities when needed.
“This is more than just a room, it’s a symbol of our commitment to accessibility,” Richardson adds. “We’re excited to offer this space and provide a welcoming environment for all travelers, regardless of their abilities.”
By offering this sensory room, Gerald R. Ford International Airport is setting a new standard for inclusive air travel. This initiative underscores the importance of making airports and travel experiences more accessible, especially for neurodivergent travelers who may face unique challenges. The thoughtful design of the sensory room demonstrates a deep understanding of the diverse needs of passengers and ensures that all individuals, regardless of sensory sensitivities, can travel with greater ease and comfort.
