Sensory Bags Boost Inclusivity in West Michigan Events

Sensory Bags Boost Inclusivity in West Michigan Events

Sensory processing issues affect many individuals, with studies suggesting that as many as one in 20 people experience challenges in this area. The prevalence is even higher among those with clinical conditions such as ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder, according to research from the National Institutes of Health. These challenges can significantly impact daily activities and experiences, particularly in environments that are loud or overwhelming, such as sporting events and concerts.

To address these concerns, the West Michigan-based nonprofit “I Understand” is making strides to improve inclusivity in local sports and performance venues. The organization is providing sensory bags designed to help individuals manage their sensory needs, creating a more accommodating atmosphere for all attendees. By doing so, “I Understand” aims to ensure that everyone, regardless of their sensory processing abilities, can enjoy live events without feeling overwhelmed.

For many people, experiences like hockey games or concerts can be intimidating and unbearable. The bright lights, loud noises, and large crowds can lead to sensory overload, making it challenging for individuals with sensory processing issues to fully engage in the event. “For those that need some comfort and calm during the game, or the concert,” said Vonnie Woodrick, Founder of I Understand. “I recognize the need that not everyone can handle the noise, the crowds; they’re distracted very easily. And so working with Van Andel Arena and the Grand Rapids Griffins, we said, what can we do?” she explained. This proactive approach shows a commitment to making these venues accessible to all.

Initially, the organization explored the possibility of creating a dedicated sensory room within the venues. However, due to limited space at both Van Andel Arena and DeVos Performance Hall, the team shifted focus to sensory bags. This decision allows for flexibility and immediate access for attendees in need of support.

The sensory bags contain nearly a dozen carefully selected items designed to provide comfort and distraction for those who need it. Each bag includes:

  • A wiggle seat, allowing users to fidget while remaining seated
  • A weighted lap pad, which can provide a calming pressure sensation
  • Noise-canceling headphones to block out overwhelming sounds
  • A fidget toy for tactile engagement
  • Strobe-canceling glasses to reduce visual stimulation
  • Verbal cue cards for communication support
  • A stress ball to help manage anxiety
  • Disinfectant wipes for hygiene

This thoughtful collection of tools is intended to create a more enjoyable experience for all attendees, regardless of their sensory needs. Anyone attending events at Van Andel Arena or DeVos Performance Hall can request these sensory bags for free, making the process easy and accessible.

“It’s super easy to do,” said Eddie Tadlock, the Assistant General Manager at ASM Global. “They just come to our guest services counter, which is right here. We also have a guest services counter at the performance hall, and they just check it out with the admission attendants. Real easy,” he said. This straightforward approach ensures that those who require additional support can access it without hassle.

The motivation behind these sensory bags is deeply personal for Woodrick. As a mother of a son with sensory issues, she understands firsthand the challenges that families face in navigating public spaces. “I understand the struggle. I understand the pain as a mother watching a child that maybe can’t go or can’t participate,” said Woodrick. “These are how people are born, or maybe situations that have arisen in their life, that they may need extra care,” she added. Her personal experiences drive her passion for creating inclusive environments for everyone.

The sensory bags are available for anyone attending events at Van Andel Arena or DeVos Performance Hall, with no prior registration necessary. You can simply request a bag upon arrival, ensuring that every guest has the opportunity to enjoy the event in a way that suits their individual needs. This initiative not only promotes inclusivity but also fosters a community spirit where everyone can feel welcome and supported.

Through efforts like those of “I Understand,” we can continue to make strides toward a more inclusive world, one sensory bag at a time.
